"Did You Hear What I Said? Why Communication Needs to be More Than Just One Person Talking"

Miscommunication is the #1 cause of workplace conflict, production errors, low morale customer complaints and poor teamwork. In a famous movie scene one person says: "What we have here is a failure to communicate." All we have in common with anyone and everyone else, is this skill called communication - so it matters that we say it right and the receiver hears it right. With multi-generational and multi-cultural workforces these days, it is important you get it correct the first time. Communication is not a 50/50 proposition, it is 100% of you being accountable for getting the information across, having it understood and then getting an agreement back of what is being communicated – verbally, be it face to face, on the phone, electronically or in writing.

"The art of conversation is the art of hearing as well as being heard."
- William Hazlett

We have all experienced frustrating conversations where what we say, is not what was heard by the other person and then not acted on it them or done wrong. There is a lot that goes into effective communication, from what you say to how you say it. If the person does not like the job or the people they have to deal with, you have to communicate differently, so it is about being flexible. You can be right, or you can be kind and effective. We need to be accountable to everything we say 24 hours a day, especially in large organization where there can be time delays about important issues.

Respectful conversation includes how you sound to others, the words you use, the accuracy of what you say, the intent to be positive and the attention you give the other person. We need to say it with persuasion.

In this session you will develop a strategy of success that includes:

  • Identify what a person’s preferred communication style is
  • Utilize the core concepts of successful negotiating behaviors to achieve your goals
  • Develop a pre-conversation check list of 7 winning characteristics you need to have
  • Learn why angry and defensive people don’t understand what you are saying
  • Employ the eight power approaches to communication
  • Adopt the ASK formula for moving difficult conversations ahead
  • See how communication is body language and how to get in sync with others
  • Spotlight the skills needed to obtain clarity from people
  • Incorporate leading by attitude and personal power
  • How to communicate with generational and culturally diverse employees
