Go Beyond Goal Setting and Stop the Ridiculous Cycle of Simply Setting Goals

Each year, about the time we turn our calendars to a New Year, we hear a lot about goal setting (even though it is sometimes disguised as information about making your New Year’s Resolutions).

And it’s a little like Groundhog Day. (You’ve seen the movie, right?) Year after year, whether we’re leaders or not, we’re tasked with the arduous process of setting our goals for the following year. And initially, we’re excited about them – it’s a new year, a clean slate. Then we review last year’s goals and realize…we’ve seen these before. And disappointment sets in.

All too often we treat the work to achieve the goals just like the rest of our work. We take the time to set the goals, and then we put those goals away, nearly forgetting them, and sit back and wait for them to be reached during the year. But we don’t really change our behavior or our calendar.

Given this, it should be no big surprise that we too often frantically work in the fourth quarter to make a valiant effort to achieve them, or we rationalize that the world has changed and that goal isn’t as important as it was. In other words, we don’t reach as many goals as we could.

And as a leader, the situation is two-fold.

You have a role in supporting others in achieving their goals and you have a responsibility for modeling, because if you want a team of goal achievers, you better be achieving goals yourself!

The bottom line is that as a leader you will be defined, at least in part, by your ability to create new and better results (Even better if we can create those results faster!) And deep down regardless of your feelings about goals and goal setting, you know the first step to making those things happen is through the power of goal setting.

Join me for 60 minutes as we go beyond goal setting. Of course, the goal is always to achieve your goals, yet too often too much time is spent on setting goals to the detriment of actually achieving them! Your responsibility as a leader is to do more than set goals, but help your team(s) reach those goals.

We’ll review the importance of having a plan – and the techniques to create one. You’ll learn productivity techniques to keep focus on the big picture while keeping people focused on their goals.

You’ll also learn:
